Future Fuel - As more and more attention is being drawn to the emissions generated by fossil fuel powered transport, the scientific world is trying to find a clean solution to our ever-greater travel demands. In this film we head to Orkney in Scotland, UK where electricity from wind and tidal turbines is used to make hydrogen in a process called electrolysis. The gas is compressed and a fuel cell uses it to make electricity to power vehicles. This process of creating ‘green’ hydrogen has zero emissions. Russell Beard goes to the Orkney Islands to meet researchers who are producing green hydrogen from renewable electricity, and proving that it can be a zero carbon fuel for cars, ferries and planes.
Cooling the Cloud - Our use of online technology is ever increasing but carries a large, and largely unseen, environmental toll. Everything we do online passes through data centres which consume huge amounts of energy and emit nearly as much CO2 as the airline industry. Our use of data has only grown during the pandemic. So, how do we cope with the rising environmental cost? Josefine Volqvartz visits Stavanger, Norway to visit the Green Mountain data storage centre. Once an underground NATO ammunition depot, the facility runs on hydropower and uses a unique system to cool the data servers with fjord water.
Christiana Figueres - We also speak to the internationally recognised leader on global climate change, Christiana Figueres, about her vision for a green society. She was Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) from 2010-2016 and played a key role in the Paris Agreement of November 2015. She is now co-founder of environmental organisation Global Optimism.
