In 2012, Rakhine Buddhists tore through Rohingya Muslim communities in western Myanmar (or Burma), attacking anyone in their path. It sparked a wave of sectarian violence that spread to other parts of the country, with little hinderance from the authorities. Now tens of thousands of Rohingya are housed in primitive camps under government armed guard, while others have tried to flee overseas to Malaysia. But as People & Power reports, the refugees are being exploited and abused by people traffickers, while aid agencies and governments are failing to protect them.
